Vehicle Description

This 1968 Ford Mustang Convertible was built on Feb 13, 1968 in the San Jose assemble plate in Northern California, and was painted Raven Black with a Parchment colored vinyl convertible top, along with a black vinyl interior, with a black fabric top cover when roof was down.  The Mustang was purchased new from Metro Ford Sales Ltd. in Calgary on Dec 13th, 1968 for $4553 and it was noted on Bill of Sale that a 1965 Sunbeam Alpine was traded in for the new Convertible.  This Mustang Convertible was one of 4 Black Convertibles delivered to Maclin Ford in early summer of 1968, and all 4 Black Mustang Convertibles participated in the 1968 Calgary Stampede Parade pulling a decorated float (see picture).

The original Metro Ford Bill of Sale shows the pricing for the 1968 Ford Mustang Convertible  @ $3614

Factory Options added: Power Top $60.10, Glass Rear Window $45.60, Select Shift Cruisomatic $233.50, White Wall Tires 735×14 $56.60, Power Steering $95.90, Power Disc Brakes $70.50, AM Radio $85.00, HD Battery $8.80, Deluxe Wheel Covers $42.80, Freight & Distribution $165.40, Unloading and PDI $75.00

After the purchase of the Mustang Convertible, it was used a daily driver shuffling kids to from school and actitivies.  When the car started to show its age with 94,000 Miles on the clock with rust showing up in the front fenders, rear quarter panels and floors, it was decided in early 2013 that the Mustang Convertible should be returned to its original glory.  The original owner now in his early 80’s commissioned the Rotessorie restoration, and the Mustang was sent off to be completely disassembled down to the bare shell, rusted areas were removed, cleaned up and new floors, front fenders and rear quarter panels installed.  With all the metal work completed, the car was sent to A-1 Autobody in Calgary, AB to be painted and assembled.  The bare shell was sprayed with several coats of primer, blocked sanded between coats, then the base coat “Raven Black” was finally applied to the shell, then the body shell was buffed and polished followed by several layers of clear coat.  The original factory 289 cu in V8 was completed disassembled and rebuilt, the original CN236J 3-Speed Auto Transmission was overhauled with new Torque Converter, friction clutches, bands, modulator, filter, gaskets and seals.  With the engine and transmission together again, it was reinstalled into the freshly painted engine bay, with a new wiring harness.  A complete new exhaust was installed, new brakes, hoses, shocks, bushings, suspension and steering components were all replaced.  The body trim parts which were 90% refreshed, included re-plated chrome trim and bumpers, rubber bushings and convertible top rubber seals where re-installed on the car.  A new Black Hartz Cloth convertible top, new interior carpets, a upholstery kit including door panels, dash and seats which installed.  Most of the new parts for the car were ordered from Ford OEM parts, and several dedicated Mustang Parts shops in Calgary and Dallas TX.  The running completed car had a 4 wheel alignment, all wheels rebalanced, body gaps and convertible electric top were adjusted.

Its unfortunately the original owner who was now in his late Eighties passed away prior to the car being finish and never got to see his pride and joy, in its newly restored original spec’d 1968 Mustang Convertible condition.

The surviving family members have decided to put the 1968 Mustang Convertible up for sale and pass the torch to the new enthusiast to enjoy the car cruising with the top down on the warm summer days and nights.
